Yesterday we went shopping at Laxmi Palace, a small Indian grocery in the West End of Richmond, Virginia. What a fun shop! Truth be told, it was quite overwhelming, as many of the items on the shelves, from prepackaged goods to vegetables, were entirely unfamiliar. Which is to be expected, of course- there is just so much to learn! For example, can anyone identify the spiny vegetable at the top of this photo?

Another thing we noticed was the prevalence of the pickle…it seems that there was a jar of anything one could think of that was pickled!

We left with rose water, fresh ginger and turmeric, some Masala Chai tea, fig cookies and some tamarind chutney to use in a curry paste.

Thank you Laxmi Palace, we’ll be back soon!
